Suzie’s story – breaking lease due to family violence

0 min read

Suzie* is a single-mother with young children, who is a family violence victim-survivor. Suzie’s ex-partner was incarcerated due to perpetrating significant family violence against her.

Suzie was referred to Justice Connect Homeless Law for assistance terminating a fixed term lease. She had signed a new 12-month lease for her private rental property and soon after found out that her ex-partner had been released from prison. As a result, Suzie and her children were no longer safe at the property and she wanted to terminate the tenancy as soon as possible.

Justice Connect Homeless Law’s lawyers advised Suzie about her legal rights and options to end the tenancy. The lawyers worked closely with Suzie’s intensive support team, focusing on Suzie and her children’s safety. While the lawyers negotiated with the rental provider, Suzie’s support worker helped her secure refuge accommodation. The lawyers were able to negotiate an early termination of Suzie’s lease without any lease-break fees or other costs.

At the same time, Suzie was having difficulty securing a new rental property. Her support worker advocated with a potential rental provider, which led to Suzie and her children obtaining an affordable private rental property.
